Raising a “Green” Baby

Mothers want the best for their babies. For some moms, it means they want to “go green”. Unfortunately, most methods of “going green” cost a lot. However, there are simple products that you can swap to raise your baby in an eco-friendly environment without having to spend a small fortune.

Opt for cloth diapers

Instead of disposable diapers, choose to use cloth diapers for your baby. Disposable diapers can take up to 500 years to decompose. Cloth diapers, on the other hand, will only take water to wash it so you can re-use it.

Cloth diapers will also allow you to avoid chemicals. Plus, you can use them for your future babies.

You may also choose biodegradable diapers, which are made of plant-based plastics. Although they are not as eco-friendly as cloth diapers, they are compostable when discarded in a composting toilet.

Breastfeed your baby

Compared with bottle feeding, breastfeeding doesn’t require packaging. So, you can’t create waste, thereby, making it an environment-friendly option to feed your baby.

However, if bottle feeding is necessary, you shoul consider an organic instant formula milk. If you can’t find one, make sure that you choose a brand of milk made by a company that meets the guidelines of the World Health Assembly.

Choose solid foods

Ready-made foods for children contain a lot of sugar, salt, and preservatives. Therefore, you should consider feeding your baby fresh, solid foods, like fruits and vegetables. Mashing or pureeing them is ideal.

You should also be careful in choosing fresh produce options. Some items contain pesticide residue. Therefore, you should also consider buying organic produce to bypass the pesticide issue entirely.

In the long run, these options benefit your child physically while also teaching them the benefits of consuming whole foods instead of processed foods.

Conserve water during bath time

If you bathe your baby too often, you’ll use gallons of water each week while also risking giving your child dry skin. By choosing to bathe him only a few times a week, you’ll conserve water and energy and prevent your kid from suffering from dry skin.

Another “green” idea for bath time is to use shower curtains made of fabric that doesn’t contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can be harmful. You can also use products that are free of phthalates and fragrances, which are known to cause serious health problems.

Use greener toys

You can get back to basics by allowing your baby to play with wooden toys or toys made from organic cotton. When he needs a teething toy, opt for a Baltic wonder amber necklace. It’s made of natural Baltic amber that’s great for reducing pain when your child is teething.

Opt for green cleaning products

Most cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that are harmful to your baby. With that said, make sure that you choose non-toxic cleaners only. If possible, use homemade solutions, such as a mixture made of baking soda and lemon juice to clean.

For detergents, opt for mild cleaners that are easy on your baby’s sensitive skin and the environment.

Teach your child how to go green

Children internalize everything that they see and hear. To show them how to take care of the environment, be a good example. For example, you must turn the lights off when you don’t need them. Avoid wasting food. By teaching your baby the importance of taking care of the environment, he’ll grow up understanding the importance of preserving the environment.
