First of all, what is a CPAP machine?
CPAP stands for “Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy”. It is a type of headgear worn during sleep, meant for those who suffer from sleep apnoea. It has a mask connected to a hose, which pumps steady streams of air into your airway to make sure you have enough oxygen throughout the night, as well as keeping your airway from collapsing.
The most important benefit of a CPAP machine is, of course, helping with sleep apnoea. Sleep Apnoea is a sleeping disorder wherein there are pauses in your breathing as you sleep, and the CPAP is a LONG-TERM therapy meant to combat this. If you are suffering from this disorder, your body becomes weaker because of the lack of sleep, and the consequences can go much deeper than simply feeling chronic fatigue throughout the day. Sleep Apnoea has been connected to high blood pressure, obesity, heart failure and depression- not to mention the difficulties experienced when sleeping with your partner.
Using a CPAP machine religiously will also greatly improve your relationship with your partner by dispelling the problems mentioned above. It’s only natural for them to want to look out for you, knowing that you run the risk of not breathing, even if it only happens for a few seconds. Also, while a bulky piece of head gear may not be the most attractive accessory, I’m pretty sure my husband would appreciate it a lot more than me snoring like a monster truck, which is yet another effect of sleep apnoea.
It will also improve your mood a lot, as one tends to be quite cranky while having to clean the entire house and cook meals while low on energy, and it may cause some unnecessary spats in the household.
All in all, CPAP itself should no longer be considered a benefit than a necessity for those suffering from sleep apnoea. This sleeping order is dangerous, disruptive and downright annoying. CPAP will help your body get more oxygen throughout the night, stop you from snoring and allow the rest of the household to sleep, finally let you have undisturbed rest and may even help with high blood pressure caused by the disorder.
Make sure to have a follow up appointment with your doctor if you are using CPAP- if you aren’t, you are causing yourself some unnecessary sorrow.
